Justification
Carpacoce gigantea is a rare and very poorly known species, last recorded in 1962. Field searches in the 1980s were unsuccessful in relocating it in the wild, and it has not been recorded since. It may be extinct due to habitat loss to timber plantations or competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Langeberg Mountains near Swellendam.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
South Langeberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs on south-facing, moist sandstone slopes.
Threats
The lower slopes of the Langeberg north of Swellendam has been planted with commercial timber in the past, but it is no longer expanding. Invasive pines are however spreading from the plantations across the lower slopes, potentially outcompeting native species. The altitudinal range of this species is not known, and therefore it is not possible to infer whether it has been lost to plantations or not.
