Major habitats
Upper Karoo Hardeveld, Karoo Escarpment Grassland, Amathole Mistbelt Grassland, Amathole Montane Grassland
It occurs in exposed intrusive dolerite sills in nama karoo and montane grassland, 1173-1800 m.
This species is potentially threatened by livestock grazing and trampling.

It was previously a poorly known species, but extensive field surveys of the mountains around Graaff-Reinet and the Great Winterberg Mountains from 2007-2012 encountered a number of previously unrecorded subpopulations. It is now know from seven distinct subpopulations. The population is not suspected to be declining, but may be impacted if grazing pressure increases.
