Scientific Name | Galenia glandulifera Bittrich |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | AIZOACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2019/10/23 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo |
Justification | Galenia glandulifera has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 18 180 km². There are between 10 and 15 locations, and it is suspected to be declining due to overgrazing. It is listed as Near Threatened based on the criteria B1ab(iii,iv,v). |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Great Karoo in South Africa, where it occurs from Whitehill to Prince Albert. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Koedoesberge-Moordenaars Karoo, Gamka Karoo, South Swartberg Sandstone Fynbos, Matjiesfontein Quartzite Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in stony soil in karroid shrubland. |
Threats |
Some Galenia species are known to be unpalatable and increase under conditions of overgrazing, but this species appears to be sensitive to overgrazing. Recent observations are mainly from road verges, which are areas between roads and fences where there is less grazing pressure, and notes on specimens also indicate that it is not found in vegetation that has been grazed. Another indication of its sensitivity to grazing is that it was only collected once during extensive recent field surveys as part of the Karoo BioGaps Project (2015-2018). Ongoing aridification of the Karoo linked to climate change is also likely to place pressure on this species. |
Population |
Galenia glandulifera is known from 11 extant subpopulations, but is possibly under-collected. Notes on herbarium specimens indicate that this species is occasional in its distribution. A continuing decline is inferred from widespread overgrazing occurring across its range.
