Cliffortia strigosa is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 47 km². It is known from two to three locations and is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D.

It occurs in moist sandstone fynbos, often on shaded slopes.
Threats
Alien invasive plants are spreading along the lower slopes and valleys of Bain's Kloof (N.A. Helme, pers. obs.). They are likely to outcompete native species if left unmanaged.
