Scientific Name | Lachenalia marginata W.F.Barker subsp. marginata |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2020/03/02 |
Assessor(s) | G.D. Duncan, H. Mtshali & L. von Staden |
Justification | This taxon has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4285 km². It is known from 10-15 locations, and is declining due to ongoing habitat loss to crop cultivation. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This taxon occurs from the Bokkeveld Escarpment around Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape southwards to the Cederberg Mountains in the Western Cape. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Cederberg Sandstone Fynbos, Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos, Swartruggens Quartzite Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on sandy and gravelly flats and slopes in fynbos. Mature fruits split open and the seeds are dispersed by wind over a large area. Pollinators are not known, but it is likely to be pollinated by bees due its sweetly-scented flowers. |
Threats |
On the Bokkeveld Escarpment and in the Gifberg there is ongoing habitat loss to rooibos tea cultivation. Subpopulations in the Cederberg are not threatened. |
Population |
Plants occur as scattered individuals or in small groups (Duncan 2012). A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss.
