Widespread across South Africa, also occurring in Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. It is absent from tropical Africa, but occurs across North Africa, Eurasia, North America and Australia.

Description
Seasonal pools, ponds, slow-flowing streams, furrows and irrigation ditches.
Population

This species is common and weedy in places, often considered a problem plant in irrigation systems (Manning and Goldblatt 2013).
