Scientific Name | Kalanchoe longiflora Schltr. ex J.M.Wood |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | CRASSULACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2011/09/21 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & A. Dayaram |
Justification | EOO 16 km², this rare and very poorly known species is suspected to occur at less than five locations, and is potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to its proximity to densely populated areas. However, as it occurs on rocky sites it is unlikely to be declining due to habitat loss to expansion of human settlements or agriculture. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | KwaZulu-Natal |
Range | Tugela Ferry to Muden. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Thukela Valley Bushveld |
Description | Cremnophyte on shale slopes. |
Threats |
This species occurs in very densely populated areas where most of the natural vegetation is severely degraded, as a result of expanding settlements, agriculture and overgrazing. However, as it grows among rocks, it is unlikely to be severely threatened or declining. |
Population |
Population trend | Stable |
Notes |
There are a number of records for this species from outside of KwaZulu-Natal, however, they pre-date Tölken's revision (Tölken 1985), which indicates that this species is very restricted in range and only found in the upper Tugela catchment. It is suspected that these records are misidentifications, possibly of the closely related K. sexangularis. |
