Justification
This species is poorly known in South Africa, and is possibly not sufficiently distinct from C. latifolia to warrant recognition as a separate taxon, or records attributed to this species may even be hybrids.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
KwaZulu-Natal
Range
Nkandla Forest, Ngoye Forest, and forests around Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Also occurring in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats

Description
Mixed evergreen forest, evergreen rainforest and submontane gully forest.
Threats
All Cryptocarya species are used medicinally, and many species are in decline or facing extinction as a result of over-exploitation. The ground bark of. C. liebertiana is mixed with crocodile fat and used to treat chest troubles (Diniz 1997). It is also potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to deforestation for subsistence use and alien plants (parasites).
Population
Population trend
Unknown
Notes
C. liebertiana is difficult to distinguish from C. transvaalensis, with which it was confused in the past (Coates-Palgrave 2002, Diniz 1997), as well as C. latifolia (Diniz 1997). Diniz (1997) suggests that C. liebertiana from East Africa is perhaps only a subspecies of C. latifolia. Boon (2010) doubts whether scattered records from forests in KwaZulu-Natal are C. liebertiana, and suggests that they may be hybrids of C. woodii and C. latifolia.
