Justification
Chaenostoma calycinum is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 15 510 km². It is rarely recorded, but most likely overlooked. It is threatened by habitat loss in parts of its range, but is also resilient to disturbance, and therefore not suspected to be in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Major habitats
Tsomo Grassland, Mthatha Moist Grassland, Drakensberg Foothill Moist Grassland, Lesotho Highland Basalt Grassland, Transkei Coastal Belt, Subtropical Dune Thicket, Hamburg Dune Thicket
Description
It occurs on sandy floodplains, grassy slopes, in dune scrub and on earth banks.
Threats
There is ongoing habitat loss to urban expansion around Mthatha and Qunu, but this is currently affecting only a small part of this species' range.
Population

Chaenostoma calycinum is common in open areas and appears to rapidly colonize disturbed places with bare ground (Hilliard 1994). It is known from 15-20 locations, but likely to be overlooked and more common than records suggest, as it occurs in a botanically poorly explored area.
