Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Nemesia fourcadei A.L.Grant ex K.E.Steiner
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
SCROPHULARIACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Insufficient Information
Assessment Date
2011/03/17
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden & D. Raimondo
Justification
A range-restricted (EOO 55 km²) annual known from only three collections, two from areas now highly transformed. It is not known whether this species is merely overlooked, or whether it is indeed very rare. Not enough is known at present about the subpopulation structure and resilience of this species to disturbance to determine its status.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape, Western Cape
Range
Nature's Valley to Kareedouw.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Forest, Fynbos
Description
Grassy areas among forest margins, or in clearings among shale fynbos.
Threats
One confirmed location is within a nature reserve where the species is not threatened. Two very old historical records are from sites now transformed by forestry plantations and crop cultivation, at one site habitat loss to crop cultivation appears to be continuing.
Population

An apparently very rare species, known from only three collections, it may however be overlooked. Two very old historical records are from sites now highly transformed, and it is not known whether subpopulations at these sites remain or not. However, as an annual herb preferring clearings among taller vegetation, this species might be favoured by disturbance. Not enough is known about plants' response to habitat disturbance to determine population trends.
