Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Plains at the base of the Gifberg and Matsikamma Mountains north of Klawer. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Klawer Sandy Shrubland |
Description | Sheltered beneath shrubs in loose sandy soils on south-facing ridges and flats in Klawer Sandy Shrubland. |
Threats |
This species is endemic to Klawer Sandy Shrubland, of which 90% still remains intact. Parts of the flats below the Gifberg and Matsikamma Mountains are cultivated, but the area is only marginally suited to crop cultivation, and not expanding significantly. Opportunistic ploughing of new crop fields in years of good rainfall is however causing sporadic, ongoing habitat loss. In addition, the area is overstocked with livestock, and overgrazing is causing ongoing degradation (N.A. Helme pers. obs.). There has also been mining applications in areas along the N7 and Widow River, that could potentially impact this species' habitat (N.A. Helme pers. comm.). |
Population |
This localized species is known from two adjacent farms, where it is locally abundant.
