National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v); D
Assessment Date

Justification
A highly range-restricted subspecies (EOO<6 km², AOO<1 km²), known from two subpopulations in the Knysna area. The subpopulation inside the Goukamma Reserve disappeared over the past 10 years, most likely as a result of incorrect fire management. The second subpopulation (outside the reserve) is severely threatened by invasive alien plants and urban development. There are fewer than 50 mature individuals of this subspecies extant. It is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered under criteria B and D.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is known from Goukamma Nature Reserve.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Goukamma Dune Thicket
Description
Plants grow in coastal dunes.
Threats
It occurs within a reserve but has not been found in the past 5 years. There are aliens in this reserve (pines) and a lack of fire management is possibly threatening this species. Outside the reserve, the subpopulation is currently being threatened by development (A. Schutte Vlok 2005).
Population

Most of the plants (50 individuals) were found in the subpopulation outside of the reserve. Ten individuals were known from inside the reserve but can't be relocated.
