Scientific Name | Aristea juncifolia Baker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2021/02/22 |
Assessor(s) | P.P. Nzuza |
Justification | Aristea juncifolia has a limited distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 3132 km². It occurs at many locations and the population trend is inferred to be stable. Over the past 24 years, 11% of its habitat has been transformed. Alien invasive plants are present in low densities in some parts of the range. Currently there is no quantitative information regarding the population trend hence it is inferred to be stable. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species has a restricted distribution in southern coastal areas of the Western Cape province, where it occurs from the Cape Peninsula to the Klein River mountains near Stanford. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Overberg Dune Strandveld, Cape Flats Dune Strandveld, Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos, Elgin Shale Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on coastal flats and lower mountain slopes, in sandy or stony ground, usually in wet or marshy areas. |
Threats |
A very small proportion (11%) of this species' habitat has been lost to coastal development and agriculture between the Cape Peninsula and Stanford in the past. However, as most of the remaining habitat is protected, this threat has ceased. Currently, there are no severe threats to this species, but it is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive alien pines and hakeas. |
Population |
Most of the subpopulations are protected and the population is not suspected to be declining.
