Scientific Name | Aristea inaequalis Goldblatt & J.C.Manning |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened D2 |
Assessment Date | 2021/06/04 |
Assessor(s) | P. Goldblatt & H. Mtshali |
Justification | A habitat specialist that occurs in a limited range, extent of occurrence (EOO) 3311 km², area of occupancy (AOO) 40 km². It has widely scattered subpopulations. Eight sites are currently known, but it is likely that there are a few more in the remote, unexplored areas of the southern Bokkeveld and Koebee Mountains. It is potentially vulnerable to the proposed cultivation of adjacent sands, which could increase its risk of extinction. Therefore it is listed as Near Threatened under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species has a very limited distribution to western coastal mountains, occurring from the Bokkeveld Mountains of the Northern Cape Province southwards to Pakhuis Pass in the northern Cederberg in the Western Cape Province. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Nardouw Sandstone Fynbos, Graafwater Sandstone Fynbos, Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | This habitat specialist occurs on sandstone outcrops, often in seasonal seeps, and locally wet sites. |
Threats |
Since this species occurs in crevices of sandstone pavements, it is protected from being ploughed up by its rocky habitat, however it does remain potentially threatened by cultivation of adjacent sand areas which will cause habitat degradation and impact on water availability. |
Population |
This species is fairly common in crevices on sandstone outcrops. It is known from between six and nine subpopulations that are protected. Currently, the population is not suspected to be declining. However, it has the potential to decline in future if agricultural expansion occurs in areas adjacent to known populations.
