Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Aristea cistiflora J.C.Manning & Goldblatt
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons
Family
IRIDACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)
Assessment Date
2022/01/17
Assessor(s)
H. Mtshali & J.C. Manning
Justification
A narrow endemic, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 4 km², it is known from two severly fragmented subpopulations and there is an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat due to the spread of invasive alien plants. This species is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This Western Cape endemic is restricted to the Langeberg near Swellendam.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos
Description
It occurs on lower southern slopes in peaty sandstone soil. It only flowers after fire or clearing of the veld.
Threats
The quality of habitat is declining due to spreading alien invasive pines, black wattle and port jackson species, and inappropriate management of land. If these are not controlled, they may increase in density over time, eventually outcompeting native species.
Population

This range restricted species is known from two subpopulations the first was recorded by J. Manning in 2003 at Swellendam commonage and there is no information available on the subpopulation size, the second is known from an iNaturalist observation made in December 2021 and only 10 plants were seen. This species is likely to occur as small isolated subpopulations and is considered to be severely fragmented.
