| Scientific Name | Calobota lotononoides (Schltr.) Boatwr. & B.-E.van Wyk | Higher Classification | Dicotyledons | Family | FABACEAE | Synonyms | Lebeckia lotononoides Schltr. |
National Status | Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(iii) | Assessment Date | 2021/04/23 | Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme, J.S. Boatwright & D. Raimondo | Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2119 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 56 km². Eleven locations are known, but there are likely to be more as this species is common in the area north of the Olifants River Mouth. Around 5% of the habitat is currently transformed by heavy mineral sand mining and decline is continuing. It therefore qualifies for listing as Near Threatened under criterion B. |
Distribution | Endemism | South African endemic | Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape | Range | This species is endemic to the Northern and Western Cape, South Africa. It is found along the coast from Hondeklipbaai to Veldrift. |
Habitat and Ecology | Major system | Terrestrial | Major habitats | Namaqualand Inland Duneveld, Namaqualand Coastal Duneveld, Namaqualand Strandveld, Namaqualand Heuweltjie Strandveld, Namaqualand Sand Fynbos, Namaqualand Riviere | Description | It occurs on well-drained, deep sandy soils, adapted to shifting sand dunes. |
Threats | About 5% of the population is currently threatened by habitat loss to heavy mineral sand mining, and one subpopulation could be affected by a proposed wind farm. Most subpopulations however are not threatened, but the population is declining. |
Population | The species is extremely common, particularly in the coastal areas north of the Olifants River Mouth. It is a resprouter, and survives even under heavy grazing pressure (N.A. Helme pers. obs.).
| Population trend | Decreasing |
