Scientific Name | Wiborgiella dahlgrenii Boatwr. & B.-E.van Wyk |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered C2a(i); D |
Assessment Date | 2012/01/31 |
Assessor(s) | J.G. Claassens, L. von Staden & N.A. Helme |
Justification | A highly range-restricted species (EOO 64 km²) with an estimated population size of fewer than 200 mature individuals. All subpopulations are very small, generally consisting of ±10 mature individuals, with the largest subpopulation having only between 50 and 100 mature individuals. It is declining due to ongoing habitat loss to coastal and industrial development and limestone mining. It is therefore assessed as Endangered under criteria C and D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species' distribution ranges from Jacobsbaai to Langebaan. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Saldanha Limestone Strandveld, Saldanha Flats Strandveld, Saldanha Granite Strandveld |
Description | Plants grow in limestone strandveld and granite outcrops. |
Threats |
It is primarily threatened by habitat loss to rapidly expanding coastal development, as well as industrial development, limestone mining and quarrying. The largest subpopulation occurs on a ridge densely invaded by alien acacias. |
Population |
This is an extremely rare species, but also very cryptic and easily overlooked. It is restricted to the southern portion of the Vredenburg Peninsula and no further subpopulations could be found further north despite searches. About eight subpopulations are known, and all are very small, consisting of 10 or fewer individuals. Only one subpopulation on privately owned land is somewhat larger, consisting of 50-100 mature individuals. Two of the smaller subpopulations are protected in local nature reserves, but others face a severe threat from development and the population is likely to continue to decline.
