This subspecies has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 187 998 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 492 km². It is widespread, and is listed as Least Concern.

It is widespread in southern Africa, extending from northern Eastern Cape to Mpumalanga in South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini.

Description
It occurs in well-watered grassland, mainly above 600 m.
Threats
It has lost 35% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) from habitat degradation due to livestock and too frequent fires, and from competition from alien invasive species.
Population

The population is widespread across southern Africa. In South Africa, it is known from over 30 subpopulations. There is no indication of its population size but the population is suspected to be stable.
