Justification
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 122 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 36 km². Four small, severely fragmented subpopulations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. There are less than 500 mature individuals known and no subpopulation has more than 250 individuals. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criteria B and C.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
It is endemic to South Africa, and is only found along the eastern base and lower slopes of the Piketberg in the Western Cape Province.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Shale Renosterveld
Description
It occurs in well-drained clay flats in Swartland Shale Renosterveld, and in loamy sandstone-derived soils.
Threats
This species has lost 63% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) to agricultural expansion and infrastructure development, and loss is ongoing. Remaining subpopulations are confined to small fragments subjected to continued degradation due to overgrazing, unmanaged alien invasive plants and inappropriate fire management.
Population

Previously, only one subpopulation was known, but recent field surveys have located three more in a small area north of Piketberg town. All subpopulations are small, the largest consisting of around 250 mature individuals, and occur on small, isolated fragments of lowland renosterveld. The total population size is less than 500 individuals.
