Justification
This is a highly range-restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) that is less than 10 km². It is known from three small, severely fragmented subpopulations. One subpopulation was lost in 2006 to agricultural infrastructure development. The remaining two subpopulations are isolated in narrow road verges, where they are vulnerable to road maintenance and construction. It is therefore listed as Critically Endangered under criteria B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species endemic to a small area near De Rust in the Little Karoo in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Muscadel Riviere
Description
It occurs in deep gravel soils on alluvial flats.
Threats
It has declined due to agricultural expansion in the past, and further agricultural development, as well as urban expansion remain potential threats. The most significant threat however to the very small and localized population is upgrades or repairs to road infrastructure.
Population

This species is known historically from three locations within a very small area, but one location was lost to agricultural expansion in 2006 (J.H. Vlok pers. obs.). The other two locations are in road verges. At one of these sites, there are only about 20 plants, the number of plants at the other site is not known. As threats are ongoing, the population is expected to continue to decline.
