Scientific Name | Babiana teretifolia Goldblatt & J.C.Manning |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Critically Endangered A3c |
Assessment Date | 2021/04/13 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & N.A. Helme |
Justification | This species is locally common in an extremely restricted range (extent of occurrence 294 km²) in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. A population reduction of more than 80% is projected to occur within the next three generations (30 years), if planned mining expansion across its range is to go ahead. It is therefore listed as Critically Endangered under criterion A. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | It is endemic to South Africa, and is found west of Koekenaap from a single extended population on the Farms Kommandokraal and Skilpadvlei near Lutzville in the Western Cape. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Namaqualand Sand Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in deep sand in coastal sandveld. |
Threats |
Severely destructive open-cast sand mining is threatening the entire known population of this species. Mining is already causing ongoing habitat loss in the northern part of this species' range. |
Population |
it is known from a limited area in coastal sands between Brand-se-baai and the Olifants River, but there is an open-cast sand mining proposal on this entire area, which could cause the loss of the entire population of this species. This species is known from two collection localities, one around an existing open-cast mine near Brand-se-baai, where it may have already declined due to habitat loss to mining in the past, and a second just north of the Olifants River, which falls within the new proposed mining area. As similar habitat is continuous between these two localities, it is likely that there is one continuous population across this area, but more field surveys are needed to determine the exact size and extent of the population (N.A. Helme pers. comm.).
