Justification | This rare local endemic, with an area of occupancy (AOO) of 44 km², is known from six subpopulations that are small consisting of fewer than hundred plants. The population is estimated to be less than 1000 plants, and it is not suspected to be declining. This species is therefore listed as Vulnerable D1. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | It is a local endemic to the Western Cape Province, South Africa, and is found in the southern Knersvlakte and lower slopes of the Bokkeveld and Kobee Mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Vanrhynsdorp Gannabosveld, Knersvlakte Shale Vygieveld, Knersvlakte Quartz Vygieveld |
Description | It occurs on quartz patches on dry stony flats and lower mountain slopes. |
Threats |
A small percentage of this species' habitat was lost to crop fields in the past. Alien invasive plants have been observed in low densities near some of the subpopulations. If these are not controlled, they are likely to increase in density and eventually outcompete native species. This species is also potentially threatened by habitat loss to gypsum mining and grazing. |
Population |
It is rare on quartz patches and is currently known from six scattered subpopulations within a small area. Three known subpopulations are small, consisting of fewer than a hundred plants. It is estimated that there are fewer than 1000 plants. As there are currently no severe threats, the population is not suspected to be declining.
