This Cape endemic has a wide distribution range with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 23 939 km² and is not currently threatened. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Range
Babiana scariosa is endemic to South Africa, and extends from the Bokkeveld Mountains and Roggeveld Escarpment in the Northern Cape, to the Hex River Mountains, and western Little Karoo near Montagu and the Touwsberg in the Western Cape.

Description
It occurs on dry sandstone or clay slopes, in arid fynbos or karroid scrub.
Threats
Locations in the north of the range near Nieuwoudtville may have been affected by loss of habitat in the past due to agriculture. However, this species does not face any serious threats.
