Justification
This is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 71 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 28 km². It is known from eight locations and the population is declining due to ongoing habitat loss, as well as competition from alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
It is endemic to South Africa, and is found immediately north and west of Saldanha Bay in Western Cape.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Saldanha Limestone Strandveld
Description
It occurs in seasonally damp places in rocky limestone hills and calcrete near the coast.
Threats
This species is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to coastal development around Jacobsbaai, where at least two known locations have already been earmarked for development. Two known locations occur on land owned by a cement manufacturing company, and are likely to be lost to limestone mining in the future. Plants in at least one known location are also threatened by competition from alien invasive plants. Overall, it has lost 17% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS).
Population

Subpopulations of this species are found scattered in the Vredenburg District, from Jacobs Bay to the West Coast National Park. There is no information available on the size of the subpopulations. However, in 2018, one observation in Jacobs Bay estimated the population to be between 10 and 50 individuals. Between 50-100 plants were observed in West Coast Peninsula in 2021.
