Justification
Dierama formosum has a localized distribution in South Africa (national EOO 2225 km²), but it is not threatened. Most subpopulations occur in protected areas.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
This species has a disjunct distribution on the highlands of southern Africa. In South Africa, it is localized to the Mpumalanga Highveld around Dullstroom and Lydenburg. Further north, it also occurs on the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe and adjacent areas in Mozambique, as well as Mount Mulanje in Malawi.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Afromontane Fynbos, Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld
Description
It occurs in high altitude montane grassland, 1900-2200 m.
Threats
A small proportion of the subpopulation on Mariepskop was lost to construction of telecommunications infrastructure (J.E. Burrows pers. comm.). A few subpopulations around Dullstroom are potentially threatened by habitat loss to development and competition from alien invasive plants, but overall, most of the Mpumalanga subpopulations occur within protected areas where they are not threatened.
Population

This species is sporadically encountered in high altitude grasslands (M. Lötter pers. comm. 2017). Subpopulations tend to be small (J.E. Burrows pers. comm. 2017). Although there has been sporadic declines in the past, the population is not currently suspected to be declining.
