Justification
Known from a very small range (EOO 1200-5500 km²), and eight to 10 locations in an area that is highly transformed by forestry plantations and where heavy grazing by livestock is causing a continuing decline in habitat quality.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
KwaZulu-Natal
Range
KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Midlands Mistbelt Grassland, Mooi River Highland Grassland
Description
Open grassland in deep, dolerite soils, 1100-1700 m.
Threats
Much of the habitat of this species is either undergoing afforestation or is heavily grazed (Hilliard & Burtt 1991). Grassland transformation by agriculture and forestry has severely reduced suitable habitat. Less than 1% of the grasslands of Moist Midlands Mistbelts remain and less than 0.3% is protected. Midlands Mistbelt Grassland is one of the most threatened vegetation types of KwaZulu-Natal (Mucina & Rutherford 2006).
