National Status | Status and Criteria | Endangered A4d; C1+2a(i) | Assessment Date | 2022/07/06 | Assessor(s) | J.H. Vlok & D. Raimondo | Justification | This species has a limited distribution range and has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4311 km ², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 48 km². Nine subpopulations are known, but there are likely to be a few more in unsurveyed renosterveld fragments, and it is estimated that there are around 15 subpopulations. A 40% population reduction is estimated to have already occurred within the past two generations due to collecting for the specialist succulent horticultural trade, alien plant invasion, overgrazing and trampling by livestock, especially ostriches, as well as habitat loss to crop cultivation. This is a highly desirable species for collection and plants continue to be removed from the wild. Decline is ongoing and a further 20% decline is expected to take place by 2040, (generation length 50 years). The total population is suspected to be less than 2500 individuals with no subpopulation having more than 250 individuals. It therefore qualifies as Endangered under criteria A and C. |
Distribution | Endemism | South African endemic | Provincial distribution | Western Cape | Range | This species is endemic to South Africa and ranges from Robertson to Riversdale in the Western Cape Province. |
Habitat and Ecology | Major system | Terrestrial | Major habitats | Robertson Karoo, Breede Shale Renosterveld, Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld | Description | It occurs on shale or sandstone flats in renosterveld. |
Threats | This species has become extremely rare due to over-collecting, and habitat loss to road construction and agricultural expansion. Remaining subpopulations are small, and continue to decline due to ongoing collecting and habitat destruction as a result of ostrich farming. One subpopulation is also threatened by alien invasive plants. |
Population | The population is estimated to consist of less than 2500 individuals. The subpopulations are typically very small, with no subpopulation estimated to have more than 250 plants.
