Description
Well-drained sandy soils, predominantly on flats in sandstone, quartzite and alluvial fynbos.
Threats
Subpopulations on alluvial sandy flats in the Koue Bokkeveld and west of Touwsrivier are threatened by ongoing habitat loss to crop cultivation. Remaining vegetation on the flats west of Touwsrivier is also severely degraded due to overgrazing, and it is not certain whether this species survives in this area, where it was last recorded in 1924. In valleys in the Koue Bokkeveld, some subpopulations may also have been lost to dam construction.
Population

Ixia contorta has a narrow distribution range on the arid eastern margin of the fynbos biome, which remains botanically still relatively poorly explored. It is known from at least 11 locations, but it is highly likely that more exist. At least half of known subpopulations are threatened by habitat loss.
