Major habitats
Fynbos, Succulent Karoo
Description
Shale or mudstone slopes and flats, occasionally in heavy clay on rocky dolerite slopes.
Threats
Ixia lacerata occurs in Central Mountain Shale Renosterveld and Koedoesberge-Moordenaars Karoo, both of which are still more than 90% intact. Although some subpopulations are possibly threatened by habitat loss to crop cultivation, the area is only marginally suitable to cultivation, and agricultural expansion does not affect the majority of subpopulations, and is unlikely to cause this species' extinction in the near future. Parts of the Roggeveld Escarpment is severely overgrazed, but this species does not appear to be sensitive to grazing - it has been recently recollected at a number of historical localities.
Population

Ixia lacerata has a limited distribution range, but is known from at least 10-12 locations, mostly from roadsides. The area is botanically still relatively poorly explored, and since more than 90% of the natural vegetation in the area is still intact, it is highly likely that many more subpopulations exist.
