Description | Shallow water close to river banks. |
Threats |
This species is occurs in a fairly arid region, and streamsides are often cultivated as they are close to water sources for irrigation. In some places, cultivation may cause some habitat disturbance, but is unlikely to lead to habitat destruction. Dam construction could potentially lead to the loss of some subpopulations if streambanks are flooded, as well as drying out of downstream habitat. Several dams have already been constructed in the streams where this species occurs, and it appears that subpopulations persist downstream of dams. |
Population |
Ixia rivulicola is a localized habitat specialist, and the only species in the genus that grows in standing water. Recent field observations indicate that it is locally abundant in suitable habitat. Monitoring is required to determine whether agricultural expansion is having a negative impact on the population.
