Threats |
Agricultural expansion has caused a 60-70% loss of this species' lowland habitat, particularly in the Overberg, where only isolated remnants remain, and loss continues. Small remnants unsuitable to cultivation are often overstocked with livestock, and a combination of overgrazing, trampling and a lack of fire are causing ongoing degradation of these areas. Competition from unmanaged alien invasive plants are also threatening remaining subpopulations of this species across its range, but is particularly severe on the Agulhas Plain. |
Population |
Ixia flexuosa is a formerly common species, but its population is becoming increasingly fragmented due to 60-70% habitat loss across its range. Most subpopulations are now confined to isolated remnants of lowland vegetation surrounded by crop fields. Many recent records indicate that it is likely to still occur at at least 40 locations, but the population continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
