Scientific Name
Ixia calendulacea Goldblatt & J.C.Manning
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons
Family
IRIDACEAE
Synonyms
Ixia maculata L. var. intermedia G.J.Lewis
National Status
Status and Criteria
Least Concern
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
This relatively widespread (EOO 23 597 km²) species is threatened across its range by habitat loss to crop cultivation (mainly for potatoes and rooibos tea). It is however still fairly common and not yet in danger of extinction.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
West Coast coastal plain between the Groenrivier Mouth and Langebaan, and inland as far as Porterville and the Olifants River Valley. One disjunct location is recorded from the Cape Flats.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
Deep, well-drained sandy soils.
Threats
Severely threatened across most of its range by continuing habitat loss to rooibos tea and potato cultivation. Urban expansion and coastal development are threatening coastal populations around Vredenburg, Langebaan and Saldanha.
Population

Subpopulations are often described on herbarium labels as small and localized. This species, although still relatively common, is declining rapidly. The data is however not available at present to estimate the rate of population decline.

Population trend
Decreasing
Notes
It is not certain whether the Cape Flats population is naturalized or of wild origin. Plants occur in a fragment of natural vegetation and are unlikely to have been planted there, but may have escaped from surrounding urban gardens. Because of the large disjunction with the rest of the range of this species and the uncertainty as to whether or not it is a natural population, it is excluded from the estimate of Extent of Occurrence.
