Family | IRIDACEAE |
Synonyms | Ixia longituba N.E.Br. var. longituba |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2012/10/31 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | EOO 4080 km², fewer than 10 small, severely fragmented remaining subpopulations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation as a result of agricultural expansion. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Bot River to Swellendam and Bredasdorp. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Western Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Elim Ferricrete Fynbos |
Description | Heavy clay soils at low elevations. |
Threats |
This subspecies' habitat, Rûens Shale Renosterveld and Elim Ferricrete Fynbos, is already 93% transformed, predominantly for crop cultivation, and only small fragments remain. Loss continues, and in addition, remaining fragments continue to be degraded by alien invasive plants, a lack of fire and severe overgrazing. |
Population |
This subspecies has been recorded only four times in the past 20 years, from very small, isolated and degraded fragments. All other records are very old, and from vague localities in areas now >90% transformed. It is estimated that fewer than 10 subpopulations remain.
