Scientific Name | Ixia rigida Goldblatt & J.C.Manning |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2016/11/19 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Ixia rigida is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 89 km². It is known from five locations and is potentially threatened by overgrazing by livestock, and is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criteria D2. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Roggeveld Escarpment in South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Roggeveld Karoo, Roggeveld Shale Renosterveld, Nieuwoudtville-Roggeveld Dolerite Renosterveld |
Description | It occurs in rocky red clay soils on dolerite outcrops. |
Threats |
Large areas of the Roggeveld Escarpment are severely overgrazed. This species was observed in overgrazed areas, but does not appear to be negatively impacted, except that plants do not set seed as a result of grazing during the flowering season (Goldblatt and Manning 2012). Plants could also potentially decline due to habitat degradation as a result of long-term overgrazing. |
Population |
Ixia rigida was recently described, and is still known from only a few records. Its local abundance is not known, notes associated with one collection indicate that it is common. The population is not currently suspected to be declining, but could decline rapidly as a result of depleted seed banks.
