Justification | Ixia patens is a localized species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 76 km². It is locally common, but its habitat has been much reduced by agricultural expansion. It remains at fewer than 10 locations and continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. It is listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to a small area between Villiersdorp and Worcester in the Western Cape, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Breede Shale Renosterveld |
Description | it occurs on seasonally damp clay banks and lower slopes. |
Threats |
This species' renosterveld habitat is already more than 70% irreversibly modified as a result of agricultural expansion. Subpopulations remain mainly on roadside remnants, except for the upper Doorn River valley where some substantial areas of renosterveld still remain intact. Some of these areas are however degraded due to overgrazing and a lack of fire, causing ongoing habitat degradation. |
Population |
In previous revisionary accounts, Ixia patens was described as widespread (Lewis 1962, De Vos 1999), but possibly extinct in the wild, as it was then known only from cultivated material. It was rediscovered in the wild in the vicinity of Villiersdorp, and is still known from only this area, and it is now considered that all other localities of this species are based on cultivated plants, not material collected in the wild. This species has a very narrow range, but is common on renosterveld fragments along the Villiersdorp-Worcester road.
