Family | IRIDACEAE |
Synonyms | Tritonia trinervata Baker |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2014/04/08 |
Assessor(s) | P. Goldblatt, J.C. Manning, N.A. Helme, D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | A highly localized species (EOO 425 km²), with only a few, small, subpopulations remaining on isolated fragments of natural vegetation after extensive habitat loss, predominantly to crop cultivation. Between six and 10 severely fragmented subpopulations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation as well as competition from alien invasive plants. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Elgin to Caledon. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Western Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Greyton Shale Fynbos, Elgin Shale Fynbos |
Description | Renosterveld on shale. |
Threats |
Less than 15% of this species' lowland renosterveld habitat remains after extensive loss to expanding crop cultivation. All remaining subpopulations occur on small, isolated fragments where they continue to be threatened by ongoing habitat loss to cultivation, competition from alien invasive plants, overgrazing and a lack of fire. |
