Justification
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1424 km² and is historically recorded from six locations with only the subpopulation within the Addo Elephant Park being protected. Between one and three locations are suspected to be extant, the remaining locations have been lost to livestock overgrazing, urban expansion of Port Elizabeth, and industrial development at Coega. It is therefore assessed as Endangered under criterion B.

Threats
Urban development is a severe past and ongoing threat, with subpopulations lost between the Zondags and Coega river as well as at Red house. Industrial development resulted in the Coega subpopulation being lost to the development associated with the Coega Port. Agriculture has also had a negative impact on this species, with the farmlands between PE and Addo where Coega Bontveld occurs being severely overgrazed by livestock.
