Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
Synonyms | Vernonia centaureoides Klatt, Vernonia schlechteri O.Hoffm. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2024/01/26 |
Assessor(s) | N.N. Mhlongo |
Justification | A widespread species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of between 61 331 km² and 67 178 km². It is still fairly common and is estimated to occur at between 20 and 25 subpopulations. It has no reported threats and is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga |
Range | This species occurs in Mozambique, eSwatini and South Africa. Within South Africa, it can be found in the Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland, Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld, KaNgwane Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Dolomite Grassland, Barberton Montane Grassland, Eastern Highveld Grassland, Lydenburg Thornveld |
Description | Plants grow in sandy soil near the coast, in open woodland, in grassland and in old cultivation. |
Threats |
This species has no known threats. Land-cover change and habitat loss, however remain a major threat to many species in the KwaZulu Natal province and an average of 1.2% of the natural landscape has been lost since 1994 (Jewitt et al., 2015). Approximately 64% of this species' former habitat has been transformed (calculated using GIS), though the impacts of this loss on the species are currently unknown. |
Population |
No quantitative population data are available for this species, but it is thought to exist between 20 and 25 subpopulations. There are 20 herbaria collections of this species with the date range 1890 to 2008, along with 13 recent observation records on iNaturalist. The population trend is inferred to be stable.
