A widespread (extent of occurrence 82 371 km²) and common species that is not threatened. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Range
This taxon is endemic to South Africa, and ranges from Riviersonderend east to the Kei River with outlying populations in the Little Karoo on the Swartberg and Gamkaberg.

Description
It occurs on a wide variety of substrates, in fynbos, especially grassy fynbos, and in renosterveld. Its growth and flowering is strongly stimulated by fire.
Threats
Alien invasive plants were recorded in some localities, and they continue to spread in some parts of this species' range, however, they are found in low density. At least 19% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) has been lost to agriculture and infrastructure development in the past.

As there are no severe threats to this subspecies, no significant population decline is suspected.
