Justification
Bobartia gracilis is a locally very common species. In spite of some habitat loss, it is not yet in danger of extinction. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 16 340 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 84 km². It is known from more than 10 subpopulations, and is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape
Range
This species is restricted to coastal areas of the Eastern Cape province, South Africa, from near East London northwards to Kei River Mouth and Mazeppa Bay. It is also found south of East London, from Port Alfred to Kenton-on-sea.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Hamburg Dune Thicket, South Eastern Coastal Thornveld, Eastern Valley Bushveld, Transkei Coastal Belt
Description
It occurs on grassy hill slopes at low altitudes near the coast.
Threats
This species has lost 28% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) as a result of urban and industrial expansion around East London, as well as coastal development in the southern part of its range. Sporadic decline due to ongoing development continues. It is however resilient to too frequent fires and overgrazing, the main causes of degradation of coastal areas north and east of East London.
Population

It is locally very common in spite of some habitat loss in the southern part of its range. No significant ongoing decline is suspected.
