Scientific Name | Bobartia gracilis Baker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2021/08/11 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & T. Patel |
Justification | Bobartia gracilis is a locally very common species. In spite of some habitat loss, it is not yet in danger of extinction. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 16 340 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 84 km². It is known from more than 10 subpopulations, and is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This species is restricted to coastal areas of the Eastern Cape province, South Africa, from near East London northwards to Kei River Mouth and Mazeppa Bay. It is also found south of East London, from Port Alfred to Kenton-on-sea. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Hamburg Dune Thicket, South Eastern Coastal Thornveld, Eastern Valley Bushveld, Transkei Coastal Belt |
Description | It occurs on grassy hill slopes at low altitudes near the coast. |
Threats |
This species has lost 28% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) as a result of urban and industrial expansion around East London, as well as coastal development in the southern part of its range. Sporadic decline due to ongoing development continues. It is however resilient to too frequent fires and overgrazing, the main causes of degradation of coastal areas north and east of East London. |
Population |
It is locally very common in spite of some habitat loss in the southern part of its range. No significant ongoing decline is suspected.
