Justification
Restricted to the Gariep Valley, occuring on both the South African and Namibian sides of the Orange River (EOO in South Africa 29 km²). In South Africa it is known from only one location, from fewer than 100O individuals, and is declining rapidly due primarily to habitat loss and degradation associated with open-cast mining. The subpopulations in Namibia are also in decline as a result of mining. The national status is therefore not downgraded according to the regional criteria of the IUCN.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
Southern Namibia, and northern Richtersveld, only around Sendelingsdrift.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Western Gariep Hills Desert, Western Gariep Lowland Desert, Noms Mountain Desert
Description
Clay flats with quartz.
Threats
Open-cast mining along the Orange River Valley is causing ongoing habitat loss and degradation. This species is localized to quartz flats, which provides a sensitive micro-habitat to dwarf succulent species in hot, dry desert areas such as the Richtersveld. Dust blown from exposed mine dumps are however extensively burying surface quartz pebbles, destroying the sheltering conditions provided by surface quartz. In addition, irresponsible off-road driving of mining and construction vehicles are also destroying quartz patches along the Sendelingsdrif road. Succulent collecting, as well as habitat degradation due to overgrazing are additional threats.
Population

All subpopulations surveyed over the past 10 years have been small and in severe decline. Fewer than 1000 plants are suspected to occur in South Africa.
