Justification | EOO 8391 km², this species is still fairly common, but declining across its range due to habitat loss and overgrazing. It is estimated to occur at between 10 and 15 locations. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Tanqua Karoo to Little Karoo. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Western Little Karoo, Tanqua Karoo, Eastern Little Karoo, Muscadel Riviere |
Description | Karroid scrub in loamy sand. |
Threats |
Threatened by habitat loss to agricultural expansion (mainly vineyards and orchards) around Calitzdorp, Barrydale and Oudtshoorn, where loamy alluvial soils on floodplains are extensively cultivated. It is also threatened by overgrazing across its range, as most areas in the Little Karoo are affected by overgrazing. |
Population |
This species is abundant in loamy soils in Apronveld and Gannaveld. Plants are highly palatable, and its presence indicates areas where grazing is well managed (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok 2010).
