Justification
A very rare, range-restricted (EOO 1688 km²) species, known from eight small, severely fragmented subpopulations, each consisting of no more than 100 mature individuals. The population, estimated to number fewer than 550 mature individuals, continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation due to overgrazing, too infrequent fire and competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Western Overberg between Bot River, Swellendam and Bredasdorp.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Breede Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Western Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Greyton Shale Fynbos, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos
Description
Clay soils in rocky shale outcrops.
Threats
Less than 15% of this species' lowland renosterveld habitat remains in small, isolated fragments due to extensive loss to crop cultivation. Remaining subpopulations continue to be threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation due to overgrazing, fire exclusion and competition from unmanaged alien invasive plants.
Population

A very rarely recorded species. All eight known remaining subpopulations occur on tiny isolated fragments of renosterveld - generally areas too steep or rocky to plough. Subpopulations are small, most consisting of fewer than 50 mature individuals, and the largest subpopulation has no more than 100 mature individuals.
