Scientific Name | Oxalis uliginosa Schltr. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | OXALIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2012/11/29 |
Assessor(s) | K.C. Oberlander, L.L. Dreyer, N.A. Helme & D. Raimondo |
Justification | EOO 771 km² and AOO <100 km², between two and five locations are suspected to be extant. This species has lost the majority of its habitat to citrus cultivation and dam construction. Habitat quality at remaining locations continue to decline due to overgrazing and alien plant invasion. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Clanwilliam to Citrusdal. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Freshwater |
Major habitats | Piketberg Sandstone Fynbos, Cederberg Sandstone Fynbos, Nardouw Sandstone Fynbos, Graafwater Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Marshy places or in seepage bands. |
Threats |
The building of the Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dams have likely resulted in much suitable habitat for this species being lost. In addition, crop cultivation has led to significant loss of habitat in the past. Remaining subpopulations are threatened by ongoing habitat degradation as a result of invasive alien plants and livestock grazing. |
