Justification
An extremely localized species, restricted to the area immediately north of Vanrhynsdorp (EOO <50 km²). Plants at two to three locations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss to mining.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Vanrhynsdorp.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Vanrhynsdorp Gannabosveld
Description
Alkaline sandy clay flats.
Threats
Threatened by ongoing habitat loss to gypsum mining. One subpopulation was recently (2011) discovered during an Environmental Impact survey for a new proposed gypsum mine, and is likely to be lost to mining. Similar habitat across the N7 is already extensively transformed and degraded by a large and expanding open cast gypsum mine. As this species is extremely limited in distribution, restricted to the immediate area around the mines, mining is likely to cause a significant reduction of the population of this species (N.A. Helme, pers. comm.).
Population

Subpopulations are small and localized. One known subpopulation is restricted to the road verge, and another, consisting of about 100 mature individuals is about to be lost to mining. The population size cannot be estimated, as the extent of this species' habitat has not yet been fully explored, but it is suspected to be small.
