Scientific Name | Oxalis fenestrata Dreyer, Roets & Oberl. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | OXALIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2015/05/01 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A rare, localized habitat specialist (EOO 14 km²), known from two locations and potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to overgrazing and trampling. The population is likely to be small, but more surveys are needed to confirm its size. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Richtersveld, Ploegberg and Vandersterrberg. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Goariep Mountain Succulent Shrubland, Central Richtersveld Mountain Shrubland |
Description | Shaded crevices between granite boulders on cooler, south-facing slopes. |
Threats |
Natural vegetation in this area is severely degraded due to overgrazing, especially on the plains surrounding the Ploegberg. This species' preference for rocky crevices may offer it some protection against the effects of grazing and trampling, although gravelly granite slopes are easily disturbed by large herds of livestock. |
Population |
Subpopulations are small and localized, consisting of about 50 mature individuals in two clumps about 1.3 km apart (Roets et al. 2014). A third subpopulation, known through historical records, has not been counted. It is likely that more subpopulations exist in this botanically still poorly explored area.
