Justification | The population of this range-restricted species (EOO estimated <700 km², AOO <300 km²) is severely fragmented due to over 50% habitat loss to crop cultivation and continues to decline due to rapid, ongoing habitat loss. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Graafwater to Aurora. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Leipoldtville Sand Fynbos |
Description | Sandy flats. |
Threats |
This species' habitat is currently over 50% transformed, predominantly for the cultivation of potatoes and rooibos tea, and habitat loss increasing by 10% in the past 15 years. |
Population |
Erica dregei has been collected only three times, in 1880, 1839 and 1982, from two localities about 40 km apart. It is an autumn-flowering species and possibly overlooked, however, its sandy lowland habitat is also rapidly disappearing. Urgent surveys are needed to determine how many subpopulations survive. Subpopulations are likely to be severely fragmented due to extensive habitat fragmentation.

Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
Not currently conserved in any formally protected areas. |
