National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered D
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
A naturally rare, localized resprouter, known from one location. The population consists of fewer than 50 plants, which are old resprouting individuals and recruitment appears to be unsuccessful. Potentially threatened by livestock grazing and competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Garcia's Pass.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
South Langeberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
Fynbos, dry, sandy, stony north-facing slopes.
Threats
The lower slopes of the Kleinberg and the Corente River Valley's richer clay soils are cultivated, but this is unlikely to extend onto the arid quartzitic slopes where this species grows. The most severe potential threat to this species is uncontrolled spread of invasive pines from timber plantations lower down in the valley, as well as overgrazing.
Population

This species was first collected at an unspecified locality in 1814, and rediscovered only in 1979 (Oliver 1987). The known population of this resprouter consists of 24 very old individuals, with little evidence of recruitment. To date, no other subpopulations have been found. The population is not suspected to be declining, but monitoring is required.

Population trend
Stable
