National Status

Justification
EOO and AOO <2 km², only one location with fewer than 200 mature individuals remain. This lowland species is on the verge of extinction and continues to decline as a result of livestock grazing, agriculture, alien plant invasion, road construction and the construction of a sewerage farm in the Karwyderskraal hills. It occurred in the Elgin basin, but is now locally extinct due to vineyard and orchard cultivation. We suspect decline of 80% based on loss of habitat over the past three generations (45 years).
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Elgin Valley and Bot River.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Elgin Shale Fynbos, Elim Ferricrete Fynbos
Description
Granular, quartzitic sand over ferricrete or shale and ferricrete soils.
Threats
Habitat loss and degradation as a result of crop cultivation, overgrazing, dense alien invasive plant infestations, road construction and infrastructure development. Total habitat loss is estimated to be at least 80% and loss is ongoing.
Population

Only one small subpopulation of fewer than 200 plants remain after more than 80% habitat loss, and plants continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.

Population trend
Decreasing
Conservation
The population occurs on privately owned land and is not conserved.
