Scientific Name | Erica vlokii E.G.H.Oliv. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2018/10/04 |
Assessor(s) | J.H. Vlok, D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | Erica vlokii has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1643 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 76 km². This species occurs at five to seven locations and is declining due to too frequent fire and competition from alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the mountains of the Western Cape in South Africa, where it is found in the Swartberg, Kammanassie and Outeniqua Mountains between Klaarstroom and George. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Kammanassie Sandstone Fynbos, South Swartberg Sandstone Fynbos, North Swartberg Sandstone Fynbos, North Outeniqua Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on slopes in arid fynbos. |
Threats |
Erica vlokii has lost some habitat to timber plantations on the lower slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains in the past (about 8% of its habitat has been lost). Currently, this species is threatened mainly by spreading alien invasive plants, particularly on the northern aspect of the Paardeberg, as well as too frequent fires in the Camferskloof area. |
Population |
Field observations indicate that subpopulations are small. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
